Leadership – 7 Habits

MainImg1

Why teach students leadership principles?

Students need to be equipped with skills that allow them to become leaders of their own lives.  Meaning they are not only equipped with academic literacy skills, but they can also:  communicate clearly, problem solve, set goals, interact well with individuals and groups, plan their lives for success, etc.  We aren't trying to create future CEOs, but rather would like to enable each of our students to make the most of their educational experience and to help make their future opportunities limitless.  One of the resources we are using to teach leadership skills to students is by directly teaching and exposing them in a ubiquitous way to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen R. Covey.

What are the 7 Habits?The_7_Habits_of_Highly_Effective_People

  • Habit 1:  Be Proactive
  • Habit 2:  Begin with the End in Mind
  • Habit 3:  Put First Things First
  • Habit 4:  Think Win-Win
  • Habit 5:  Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
  • Habit 6:  Synergize
  • Habit 7:  Sharpen the Saw

For a summary of these habits, click on this printable document - 7 Habits Summary  These habits give us a common language at school and home for communicating around these important principles.

Schools across the globe have begun to teach leadership principles to students and have met with great success.  The Covey Institute has written a book called the Leader in Me, which describes the positive impact this program is having on students' educational experience.  There is also a book called "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" click here for more information and  games for students surrounding the book.

Teaching students leadership principles also doubles as an anti-bullying program.  Click here to see how.
